129 Patria CAVS for Denmark
Denmark has ordered 129 of the Patria Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS) 6×6 armoured vehicles and taken the final steps to join the programme, according to a July 14 Patria press release. Delivery is expected to start this year, with deliveries to start in earnest from 2026, according to Denmark’s procurement agency, the FMI.
Having officially joined the CAVS programme in April by signing the Technical Arrangement contract, the country has now signed the remaining paperwork to enter the agreement including, “the R&D Agreement, the Frame [work?] Agreement, and the Life Cycle Management (LCM) Agreement,” the press release explains. The intent to procure 130 Patria CAVS was actually announced at the same time, with an estimated contract value of €254.6 million. This announcement marks the official contract signing and order.
The vehicles will be used by Denmark’s light infantry battalion as well as the heavy brigade that it is standing up. The primary users will be infantry and engineers, and a number of configurations will be procured including command posts, communications, ambulances, and electronic warfare platforms.
The procurement is financed through Denmark’s Acceleration Fund, a €6 billion financing mechanism set up in February 2025. The fund aims to accelerate Denmark’s build-up over the next two years, as its intelligence services anticipate a resurgent Russia within two years of the war in Ukraine ending.
The “CAVS programme continues to be a prime example for creating the desired common defence capabilities in a quick and cost-effective manner”, Mats Warstedt, Patria’s vice president for the Nordics said in the press release.
Patria and SIMA Innovation from Denmark signed an agreement in March to cooperate on the promotion of both companies products, including the SIMA ring mount, which has been integrated onto the CAVS. This may indicate that the ring mount will be fitted to Danish vehicles; a Patria display at the DALO Industry Days exhibition, which will be held in Denmark in late-August, will likely provide an indication of the Danish vehicle setup.
Calibre comment
Denmark is making rapid progress in rearming and equipping its troops while simultaneously pouring financial and material support into Ukraine and Moldova. It has, for example, recently invested in the D3 venture capital fund, a Ukrainian fund that sets out to support innovative defence start-ups. The Danish MoD is providing its satellite services to Ukraine, and the government is supporting Ukrainian companies to come and manufacture defence products in Denmark. The threat of Russia appears to have been firmly grasped by Denmark, and the investment is following to ensure that its armed forces can contribute to defence and security domestically, as well as on Europe’s borders.
