Defence in brief: Russia fields updated “Chernika-2” strike drone
Russian units fighting in Ukraine are fielding a new drone called Chernika-2 (Blueberry-2) with a form of target guidance, according to a 29th April post on Telegram. The new guidance system reportedly enables the drone to continue to its target in the event of signal jamming or disruption.
The image above posted on Telegram shows what is reported to be the updated version of the Chernika-2.
The original design allowed for the drone to fly to the target area unassisted, and only in the terminal phase would the operator take over, the developer told TASS in April 2024. Presumably, the new upgrade allows the drone to complete a strike even if the operator is unable to assume control for the final phase.
The flying-wing drone has been in use since 2022 with several updates based on operational experience. This has included an increase in engine power allowing the payload to be increased from 2.5 kg to 3.5 kg, as well as software updates. They are primarily intended to be used in strikes against buildings, trenches and fortifications.
Chernika-2 can fly for up to two hours as a reconnaissance platform without an explosive payload, or for 90 minutes as a strike platform, Russian soldiers from the 110th Brigade of the 51st Guards Combined Army told RIA Novosti in November 2024. The drones are delivered to the front in pieces and then assembled by teams from the 110th Brigade, including the addition of the software. That same source indicated that up to 200 Chernika-2s were delivered per month, and it is understood that 4,500 have been delivered since 2022.
Calibre comment
There are two broad categories of strike drones emerging in Ukraine; the first is agile and responsive like FPVs, fibre-optic drones, and Lancet loitering munitions. The second is heavier and slower, like the Chernika-2 and Molniya. They are designed to carry heavier payloads to destroy a bunker or trench.
